Engaging library fraternity with emerging technologies

It was a refreshing session delivered today (Saturday, May 29, 2021). After a big gap spoke about ‘libraries’ moving away from regular topics - research methodology, plagiarism, reference management, searching, e-learning, etc.

The word ‘emerging technologies’ used to denote the experimental stage of the technology but used as common as which is already put into action. Started the session to clarify the same with some video(s) and discussed 10 thoughts about the developments which I feel adaptable by the libraries to move ahead with National Educational Policy (NEP) 2020 and Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy 2020.

The initial 5 thoughts focused on Changing Role of the Library and its Management. The thoughts are much needed to enhance the presence of the library & the librarian; and to ensure the library is associated with stakeholders of the organization & the society at large. The first five includes - Library as a social institution (as a Common Collaborative Place); Centre of Centres (as an Action Centre for Data Centre, Language Lab, Research Support Centre, etc); Archiving Unit of Institute Intellectual Output; Research Data Management Centre; and Hub of initiative connect.

Moving further, discussed 5 technologies to help the fraternity – Discovery tool, VPN, Publication support tool, Report writing tool, and social media.

How to gear up for technology adoption - Adopt the Web-based and App-based technology; Adopt social media to connect and collaborate; Adopt ‘Software as Service’ for a supporting hand; Adopt skills to handhold the Social Wantrepreneurs*; and adopt to think beyond the horizon.

To conclude, my understanding is simple

Think beyond Library | Think beyond books | Think beyond library users | Think beyond role and responsibilities | Think beyond boundaries |
Be more than a Librarian

*Social Wantrepreneurs – Library fraternity who has zeal and idea to achieve something for his social status but needs push and support to move ahead.

Thanks to Knimbus, Venki, Karthi, for the invitation. Special thanks to Dr. Manju Naika, Librarian, IIT Mumbai for the inputs.

The new term Social Wantrepreneurs coined by you is really interesting and I feel it's really important among LIS professionals.
