Tribute to a Teacher

Happily received the mobile call from Prof. J.M. Subramanya, former Director of SDMIMD, he was so gentle, enquired about the things casually. I always admire him for his listening skills and the way he conveys the information. 

After the usual talk, Prof. JMS conveyed shocking news, about the sad demise of my friend, faculty colleague and a think tank Prof. Dr K. Balakrishnan due to a heart attack yesterday in Chennai. Having known and with regular updates on FB, Dr KB, an agile personality with care to health, personality and presentation, it was shocking news to me.

We miss you KB Sir, but your guidance, thoughts and work will be with us and SDMIMD. You have made us think differently pertaining to our institute brochure, the conduct of programs, presenting of our institute to the visitors, and, much more. Personally, you are the one who gave confidence that a librarian can fit into many roles. That gave the confidence to organize programs and deliver what institute demands beyond library services. The way you think the technology adoption for education and libraries made SDMIMD have digital library during 2005.

The great combination of yourself and Prof. JMS has always stood with the library team. It was a difficult time during shifting of SDMIMD Library to the New Campus at the foot of Chamundi Hill. The confidence, encouragement and support extended by both of you, made us take up the responsibility and be the first department in the institute to move to the new campus. 

We remember and admire the analyzing and presenting skills, for which you are known in the academic world.

      ಬಹಳ ದಿನದ ನಂತರ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲು ಒಂದು ಅವಕಾಶ. ಡಾಕ್ಟರ್ ಮಲ್ಲಿನಾಥ್ ಕುಂಬಾರರ ಅಭಿನಂದನಾ ಗ್ರಂಥಕ್ಕೆ ನನ್ನ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಒಡನಾಟದ ಕೆಲವು ತುಣುಕುಗಳನ್ನು ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಅವಕಾಶವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟ ನನ್ನ ಗುರುಗಳಾದ ಡಾ. ಹರಿನಾರಾಯಣ್ ರವರಿಗೆ ವಂದನೆ. ಈ ಒಂದು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನವನ್ನು ನಿಮ್ಮೊಂದಿಗೆ ಹಂಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಖುಷಿ ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಜ್ಞಾನನಿಧಿ ಪ್ರೊ|| ಮಲ್ಲಿನಾಥ್ ಕುಂಬಾರ್ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾದ ಡಾ|| ಮಲ್ಲಿನಾಥ್ ಕುಂಬಾರ್ ಅವರ ಗೌರವಾರ್ಥ ಹೊರತರಲಿರುವ ಸಂಚಿಕೆಗಾಗಿ ಈ ಲೇಖನವನ್ನು ಬರೆಯಲು ದೊರೆತಿರುವ ಈ ಅವಕಾಶವು ಅತಿ ಅಮೂಲ್ಯವಾದದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲು ನನಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ ಎನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಸುಧೀರ್ಘವೃತ್ತಿ ಜೀವನದ ಸಾರ್ಥಕ ಸೇವೆಯ ನಂತರ ನಿವೃತ್ತರಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾಹಿತಿ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ನೀಡಿರುವ ಲೇಖನಗಳು, ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ಷಮತೆ, ಬದ್ಧತೆ, ಕಾರ್ಯ ವಿಧಾನಗಳು ಹಾಗೂ ನೀತಿಗಳ ಅನುಸರಣೆ, ವಿಚಾರಣಾ ಮನೋಧರ್ಮ, ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ಸ್ನೇಹ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ, ಇವು ನಮ್ಮ ಕಣ್ಣ ಮುಂದೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತವೆ. ಇದನ್ನು ವಿಸೃತವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ ಪ್ರೊಫೆಸರ್ ಮಲ್ಲಿನಾಥ್ ಕುಂಬಾರರು ತಮ್ಮ ವೃತ್ತಿಜೀವನದುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ತಮ್ಮ ಆಡಳಿತ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯ, ಕಾರ್ಯೋನ್ಮುಖತೆ, ಹಾಗೂ ಕ್ರಮಬದ್ಧವಾದ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಣೆಯಿಂದ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. Engaging library fraternity with emerging technologies

It was a refreshing session delivered today (Saturday, May 29, 2021). After a big gap spoke about ‘libraries’ moving away from regular topics - research methodology, plagiarism, reference management, searching, e-learning, etc. The word ‘emerging technologies’ used to denote the experimental stage of the technology but used as common as which is already put into action. Started the session to clarify the same with some video(s) and discussed 10 thoughts about the developments which I feel adaptable by the libraries to move ahead with National Educational Policy (NEP) 2020 and Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy 2020. The initial 5 thoughts focused on Changing Role of the Library and its Management. The thoughts are much needed to enhance the presence of the library & the librarian; and to ensure the library is associated with stakeholders of the organization & the society at large. RIMS tool for analyzing research contribution

The changing dimensions of libraries and services have introduced different roles to the librarian. Awareness about teaching-learning process, documentation, record management, publication activity, participation in academic gatherings such as conference and seminar, and association with the academic network, has made librarians to extend their services beyond the library responsibility. Today, librarians are involved in many responsibilities to match the nomenclature to the roles they performed in an organization. And, the librarians have accepted the nomenclatures such as – Knowledge Manager, Record Manager, Head of Information Services, Information Manager, Head – Web Services, etc. – gracefully. Since libraries are the storehouse of publications, any activity pertaining to publication librarian will be the defined member in the committee. Hence, librarians own the responsibility of managing records of the Institute publications and publications by faculty/research community too.
